Gateway Enterprise Center: Tabled
Aberdeen City Council member Morrison made a motion to table the $16 million dollar, 20,000 square foot building known as the Gateway Enterprise Center. A second was made by Council member Pieraccinni.
The council voted 8 to 3 in favor of tabling the Gateway Enterprise Center until further notice. In support of tabling the the project was council member Morrison, Pieraccini, Taylor, Aube, Kachman, Gakin, Lawrence, and Maki. Opposed were Council member Francy, Ellis and Ross.
The only member of the council to recuse themself from the vote was the person representing the council on the Gateway Enterprise Center Committee, Council member Shaw. In a prior article, Council member Shaw's husband, John Shaw was in the running to have his newly formed non-profit to run the $16 million dollar - 20,000 square foot Gateway Enterprise Center.
A presentation early on in the meeting explained the financial health of the city. The city's financial health isn't great. Looking at the city's 6-year capital plan, it is clear that the city is overextended. A comparison with other cities with equal or greater populations are on far better footing. See presentation below:
The future of the $16 million dollar, 20,000 square foot Gateway Enterprise Center seems uncertain at this point. The Aberdeen City Council has turned a corner looking at what it can afford and what projects might be considered later given its financial outlook.
